MasterCard is a multinational financial services company, with its headquarters in Purchase in the State of New York, just a few miles north of New York City. Like its great rival Visa, MasterCard does not really lend money when you use any of its debit or credit products. Instead it facilitates payments between the customers’ bank or credit account and the merchants with whom the customer makes purchases. It does this by licensing the use of the MasterCard name and the company’s processing systems.
The History of Mastercard
MasterCard was originally founded by a consortium of Californian banks, who wished to set up a system to rival a similar service provided by the Bank of America. The “BankAmericard” eventually went on to become “Barclaycard” and now “Visa”. The rivalry between these two massive international credit franchises has therefore lasted for the entire history of both cards.
This independent Californian banking network set up their competing Master Charge service in 1966, when they formed the Interbank Card Association (ICA). The two rival services launched almost simultaneously and the battle between them has raged ever since, like a financial services replica of Coca Cola v Pepsi.
The growth of Master Charge was aided by a ground breaking agreement with its European equivalent, Eurocard in 1968. This strategic move enabled the ICA’s card to be used in Europe and for the Eurocard to be accepted by the ICA’s member banks in the United States.
The United Kingdom became involved when our “Access” card (best remembered for its iconic “flexible friend” marketing campaign) joined the ICA / Eurocard network in 1972.
In 1979, the company was re-branded, and became known by the name we are more familiar with now, MasterCard. The United Kingdom however, seemingly always slower to read the winds of change, retained its Access brand for a while longer. It was not until the 1990s that us plucky Brits bowed to the inevitable. The “Access” name was finally replaced and we joined the rest of the world with MasterCard.
Thus the Access name bit the dust, along with several other traditional British brand names which were forced to make way for their internationally recognised replacements – all in the name of globalisation. This was especially so in the world of confectionary where the chocolate, nougat and peanut bar “Marathon” became “Snickers” and the vintage “Opal Fruit” brand lost out to “Starburst”. Who knows, perhaps the latent anger caused by all this globalised name changing helped build the momentum which led to Brexit. It could have been on the bus: “£350 million for our NHS” along with “Vote Brexit to Bring Back Our Marathon”.
Perhaps the final piece in the global domination jigsaw was laid by MasterCard in 2002, when the mega-corporation merged with the Europay consortium which had operated the Eurocard brand across the pond. Thus the Eurocard name was also consigned to history and the whole world was to become a MasterCard territory.
In 2006, the co-operative arrangement between its member banks which had served the corporation well since its formation in the late 1960s was finally ended, when the company went public on May 26th. Private investment was permitted for the first time as shares were sold on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time at an Initial Public Offering (IPO). The shares were valued on the launch date at $39. The company was estimated to have a market capitalisation value of well in excess of $100bn in 2016.
Many things have changed since the launch of the fledgling Master Charge service back in the time when hippies were everywhere with flowers in their hair. Back then, flares were trendy and the best boy band was the Beatles. Many say little has changed.
But what definitely is different is the ways you can use the service which is now called MasterCard. For customers in the United Kingdom, the “flexible friend” Access card has been replaced by something that is “priceless”.
Perhaps the biggest change resulting from the passage of time has been the advent of new technology. Back in the 1960s, mobile phones were science fiction – the nearest thing to them that anyone had seen was the “tricorder” communicators used by Captain Kirk and his crew on the Starship Enterprise in the original TV series of Star Trek. Today, just about everyone has one (a smartphone, not a tricorder).
And this means that you can now use your smart device as if it was your MasterCard. There are three main different payment methods in use today. They all work in a similar way and between them they cover just about all the different devices and operating systems which are in general use.
So if you use an Apple phone or watch, a Samsung phone or indeed any phone using the Android operating system, you can use your gadget of choice to make contactless payments without even needing to carry your plastic MasterCard with you.
All you need to do is load your card details onto your phone. The precise method used to do this varies from system to system, and phone to phone: in some cases, all you need to do is take a photograph of your card with your phone! Once you’ve done this, one click or tap on your phone is enough to authorise a payment online. To make a purchase in a real world High Street store, all you need to do is hold your phone within range of the retailer’s card terminal and the goods are yours.
Of course, many people prefer to continue to use their traditional plastic cards. But even if you do, with the new contactless card, you do not need to sign for your purchase, or even swipe or physically insert it into the retailer’s terminal. Instead, you can now just tap your card, or even just hold it in the vicinity of the terminal, and your contactless payment can be made.
Also, in addition to the traditional credit and debit cards, you can also now obtain pre-paid cards. These work like other plastic cards, but instead of being linked to a bank or credit account, you have to pre-load these with funds before you can use them.
These are particularly useful for customers with a poor or non-existent credit record, because you don’t even need a bank account to open one, and there is no credit check involved. The advantage is that they look like a normal MasterCard, and you can use them in just the same way as a conventional credit or debit card: they can be used in real stores or online, in fact they can be used absolutely everywhere that accepts MasterCard.
They are also very popular with travellers. This is because they are widely accepted throughout the world, and they are safer than travellers cheques, which are becoming increasingly outmoded as the paper cheque becomes less and less acceptable as a means of payment. Also, you do not have to take the risk of carrying your own credit card with you, with the risk of it being stolen, or your card details being fraudulently used. This is because if your pre-paid MasterCard is lost or stolen, your money can be recovered.
So with all this new technology, there is no doubt that the MasterCard is as relevant today as it was back in the day of Sergeant Pepper and his Lonely Hearts Club Band. In fact, with a little help from your flexible friend, things are getting better all the time.
